FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What’s the difference between DTC and HDP Printers?

DTC stands for Direct-to-Card printing. DTC printers print directly onto the surface of the card using a thermal printhead. DTC printers offer faster printing speeds, lower cost per card, and are the best choice for printing basic photo ID cards. Unlike HDP printers, DTC printers only work well with smooth-surfaced PVC cards and are not compatible with imperfections on the card surface (like embedded chips or ridges found on technology cards), which can affect print quality. The DTC printing method leaves a thin white border around the edges of the cards, unlike HDP printers, which are edge-to-edge.

HDP stands for High Definition Printing. HDP printers, aka retransfer printers, print the image onto a clear film (retransfer film), which is then fused onto the card surface using heat and pressure. This method of printing produces superior image quality and edge-to-edge printing on cards, making HDP printers the ideal choice for printing on smart cards, proximity cards, and cards with uneven surfaces. HDP printers produce higher-quality, durable, and secure cards, making them better suited for high-security environments such as government, healthcare, and universities. Unlike DTC printers, HDP printers have a slightly slower print speed and a higher cost per card and printer due to the retransfer method.

2. What type of cards are recommended for High Definition Printers (HDP)?

HDP printers are designed to work with both standard plastic cards and technology cards. When it comes to printing on standard plastic cards, the best choice is composite cards. Composite cards are a type of plastic card made from a blend of materials, typically comprising 60% PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and 40% PET (polyethylene terephthalate). This combination makes them stronger, more durable, and more heat-resistant (retransfer printing uses heat to fuse the film onto the card) than standard 100% PVC cards. Standard PVC cards (polyvinyl chloride) are not recommended for use with HDP printers (aka retransfer printers), nor for those applications that will utilise lamination due to the risk of card warpage (as a result of heat and pressure exposure from retransfer and lamination rollers).

3. Are HDP5000, HDP6600 or HDP8500 ribbon and film consumables compatible with the new HDP5000e?

No. HDP5000, HDP6600 and HDP8500 ribbon and film consumables are not compatible with the HDP5000e ID Card Printer. However, the HDP5000e ribbon, film and overlaminate consumables are backward compatible with both the HDP5000 and the HDP5600. The HDP5000e, HDP5000, HDP5600 and the HDP8500 all use the same overlaminates.

4. Are the HDP5000e encoders (magstripe/contact/contactless) and the HDP5000e dual-sided (flipper) module compatible with the HDP5000 or the HDP5600?

No. The HDP5000e encoders are not compatible with the HDP5000 or HDP5600 due to enhancements applied to the HDP5000e printer and flipper electronics.
