What are Poly Composite Cards (PCC)?
Poly Composite Cards (PCC) are high-performance ID cards engineered for durability and heat resistance. They are constructed with multiple layers, typically featuring a PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) core for strength and heat tolerance, and PVC outer layers that provide a smooth surface for high-quality printing.
This layered design makes PCCs especially suitable for retransfer printing, which involves high heat to fuse the printed image onto the card. Unlike standard PVC cards, Poly Composite Cards maintain their shape and integrity during the retransfer process, making them ideal for high-volume or high-security applications.
What are Polyvinyl Chloride Cards (PVC)?
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a synthetic plastic polymer made from vinyl chloride monomers. It’s one of the most widely used plastics globally, found in products ranging from plumbing pipes to credit cards. In the ID card industry, PVC is valued for its affordability, printability, and flexibility, making it a popular choice for employee badges, student IDs, and loyalty cards.
PVC Cards are compatible with most desktop card printers, however, they are not recommended for retransfer printing, as they can warp or deform under the high heat used in that process.
Do I need PCC or PVC cards?
If your card printing setup includes a retransfer printer or you need cards that can withstand frequent use and environmental stress, Poly Composite Cards are the superior choice. For general-purpose ID cards in standard office settings, PVC Cards offer excellent value and print quality.
Which ID Card Printers are compatible with these White Blank PVC Double Name Badge Cards?
Because these cards are standard CR80 size and 30 mil (0.76 mm) thick, they are compatible with almost all direct‑to‑card (DTC) ID card printers on the market, just like standard CR80 blank cards.
Which ID Card Printers are NOT compatible with these White Blank PVC Double Name Badge Cards?
Although these white blank double PVC name badge Cards are compatible with almost all DTC ID Card printers on the market, they should NOT be used with HDP ID Card Printers (AKA Retransfer ID Card Printers). The reason is not the size or thickness of the cards, but the incompatibility of the pre-scored snap lines with the retransfer film mechanics. Risks of using a HDP ID Card Printer include poor film adhesion along the snap line, wrinkling or bubbling of the retransfer film, incomplete edge-to-edge bonding, film tearing during transfer, and cards jamming during the lamination/transfer process.
When do I snap the card into the two name badges – before printing or after printing?
Never snap before printing. Double-name badge PVC cards are manufactured as a single solid CR80 card with pre‑scored snap lines, so that they can be fed into an ID card printer and printed without skewing or jamming. Snap the card into two name badges along the pre-scored lines only after printing, by hand.
Correct workflow:
- Load the full CR80 cards into the ID card printer hopper (both badge panels are printed in one pass)
- Allow the ink to cool and bond (important on metallic PVC cards)
- Snap the card cleanly along the score line by hand
- Insert each badge into its holder or use adhesive backers to create name badges
